Funkstep (spoken fʌŋkstep) is a music genre of electronic dance music and a subgenre of Dubstep and also of Funky House.

 "Glitchy hip-hop beats, buzzing synth lines, and vintage funk and soul samples"라는 Pretty Lights의 말을 빌려야지만 그의 장르를 설명할 수 있다. 어쩔때는 trip-hop, 어쩔때는 Skrillex 같이 멜로디라인이 확고하지만, Skrillex보다 수준이 훨씬 더 높은 dubstep. 때로는 그의 기분에 따라 jazz vocal 샘플도 들어볼 수 있다. 언제든지 Derek Smith의 라이브 쇼를 볼 수 있는 기회가 닿는다면 무조건가라고 추천하고 싶다. 이름에 걸맡게 그의 라이트쇼는 정말 'pretty'하고 일급이니까.
